Virginia A. Boone Highland Oaks Elementary (VABHOE) School on March 4, 2016 held the 50th Anniversary Celebration of Cultural Arts Day, a yearly event in which local artists spend a day at the school showcasing their knowledge and talent.  On this dedicated day, 300 artists from throughout the community visited the school to share their talents and to demonstrate their knowledge and skills of a great variety of artistry. Despite the amount of artists it took to make this event a success, the day was also made possible by over 50 volunteers that gave their time and assistance.

Apart from its educational and entertainment value, Cultural Arts Day affords our students the opportunity to find their own inspiration, their own muse, perhaps, from one or more of the varied offerings. The students are introduced to artistic activities they can pursue in middle school, high school and beyond. During Cultural Arts Day, the entire school population of 750 students, grades Pre-K- eighth grades are encouraged to participate and interact with the 28 performing artist groups. Each class is assigned to six artists of which they rotate through in twenty minute increments. The annual event, for five decades has exposed students to the many forms of the arts from painting and violin music to ballet and Tae Kwon Do.

The purpose of the special yearly event is to introduce students to artistic activities at every level that they can pursue in middle school, high school and beyond.  The true lesson is that art has no age. “Without this annual day many of our students would not have the opportunity to experience artistry in its most expressive form- ‘live’,” says Event Chairperson Michelle Wiseman Kredi.

Many performers were VABHOE parents and relatives, parents of former VABHOE students, and both current and former students.
